Joystiq Presents PS3 Fanboy Valve's Doug Lombardi admits PS3 success, 're-evaluating' development

So, looks like Valve cannot ignore the success of the PS3 anymore. Gabe Newell, head of the critically acclaimed studio sparked a bit of controversy when he repeatedly attacked the PS3's difficult development architecture, calling it a "waste of time." His studio refused to work on a PS3 version of The Orange Box, leaving it to EA to do the eventual PS3 port.

However, it looks like the continued success of the PS3 has the studio taking back some of his words. "We're always evaluating what's happening in the marketplace and certainly something that's happening in the last couple of months is that Sony's managed to sell some boxes," said Doug Lombardi to CVG. "So whether or not you like developing for that platform, if they've got millions of people connected to that platform and buying their games you have to take it seriously."

While there's "zero chance" for a PS3 version of the upcoming zombie multiplayer game Left 4 Dead this year, there's now a "50-50" chance that it will happen some time next year. While we're fans of Valve's work, we're not entirely sure if the PS3 audience will welcome them with open arms.

Update: Huge mistake folks. The headline says Valve's Gabe Newell, when it was in fact, Doug Lombardi that made the comment. We apologize for the mistake -- the article has been corrected.

PS3 Wireless Keypad

Lastly, we’ve announced a new Wireless Keypad for PS3 that will make text communications and Web browsing much easier. The Wireless Keypad snaps onto the top of a SIXAXIS or DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller and comes with some cool features, including a mode that turns the main key area into a touch pad (similar to a touch pad on a Laptop computer). Once in this mode, you can slide your finger on this area to move the cursor on the screen and tap to enter. There will be two short cut buttons on the Keypad that will enable users to jump directly to the XMB’s “Friends” icon and the “Message Box” during gameplay. The Wireless Keypad will launch in late November.

GC 2008: Xbox 360 Controller Redesigned

A subtly redesigned Xbox 360 controller has been spotted on the showroom floor at this year's Games Convention in Leipzig, sporting a new-feel d-pad that addresses the previously unresponsive and spongy model.

While aesthetically identical to the previous controller, the d-pad has been re-engineered to offer more instant control, with an eight way input taking place of the previous four. A brief hands-on with the controller playing Pro Evolution 2009 proved that the redesign has been effective, with the d-pad sitting in a larger rocker and proving more tactile.

It's expected to release at the same time as this year's Pro Evolution Soccer, and the re-design is thought to have been inspired by the imminent release of Street Fighter IV.

We'll have photos of the new controller - though don't expect to see the difference - and further impressions later on

Tecmo President Yasuda Resigns

Multiple lawsuits have finally taken their toll on Tecmo president Yoshimi Yasuda, who resigned Wednesday. Tecmo Chairman of the Board Yasuharu Kakihara will step into the vacant position starting September 1.

Kotaku reports that the Tecmo Board of Directors accepted the resignation, which he said were for "personal reasons." Yasuda is stepping down as Tecmo is embroiled in the midst of an ongoing lawsuit with Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki.

Itagaki resigned and filed suit against the company in June for withholding a promised "special incentives" bonus for completing DOA4, which Yasuda claims were an informal promise made without the approval of the board. Since then, the plot has thickened as a separate lawsuit was filed by employees Hioaki Ozawa and Tatsuki Tsunoda claiming that they had been denied overtime pay by a "flexible hours" work scheme.

With secret audio tapes that directly contradict Yasuda's claim that his incentive promises were made without the approval of Tecmo's board (as reported by Kotaku), and the lawsuits continuing, it looks like things will get worse before they get better for Tecmo. What do you think? Did Yasuda's resignation come too late or too soon?

Final Fantasy XIII will have 'no main character'

Motomu Toriyama, the director of Final Fantasy XIII, divulged bits of information about the upcoming RPG in an interview with Famitsu PS3. We already know the demo is lengthy, but now we also know that it will allow players "to play from the opening through the prologue," similar to the Final Fantasy VII demo. Besides Lighting, players will also be able to play as the blonde male (shown above) in the demo. He remains nameless, but whatever his name is, it will be weather-related as well.

Toriyama then talks about a "new style" where FFXIII will not have an actual main character. Instead, players will experience the story from the viewpoints of different characters. One of the main focuses of the demo will be to allow players to try out this "new style." The battle system also allows you to switch characters; it will be party-based and the player will switch between each character during combat.

As a bonus, Forever Fantasy has scans of the screenshots from the FFXIII story. There are even a few Versus XIII pictures as well. Take a look here
